Summer
“Throughout high school, I just played basketball every summer. So freshman year I didn’t know you were supposed to be productive with summers.
Do be purposeful with your summers. Use them to figure out what you do and do not like. I have a lot of friends whose dream job is banking, then they’ll do it one summer, and realize they don’t like it.
What I heard from frosh was ‘I’m interested in 3-4 different things, so I don’t know which to choose. Just pick one, even if you don’t like it, that’s valuable as you choose your classes for the next year." Karl
“Don’t think your summer needs to be what everyone else is doing. I spent the summer after my frosh year in the Stanford Summer Language Program learning Mandarin. Could I have done research? Yeah. But I'm happy with what I did.” Jordan
“You don’t have to do any single thing over the summer. Great to do internships. Also great to just visit friends.
Try not to have an internship that starts the week after spring classes end. The burnout is so so real.” Phil
“Another reason not to overload yourself during the year, you always have summers to take classes.” Yaya
“Noe Lozano offers summer session grants in the engineering department. I needed a science class, so I took a geology course (not at Stanford). The class was $1200, but I only had to pay $300 out of pocket. And I believe you don’t have to put the grade on your transcript cause it’s transfer credit.” Phil
“There’re always ways to find funding. Don’t only look for paid internships. For example if you want to do research in the engineering department and the official grants are all given out, try talking to Dr. Noe Lozano.”
“Don’t sleep on the Career Development Center.” Phil
“Like all other things, try to decide what you want to do over summer early.” Yaya
“A lot of summer deadlines are in the fall and winter. Unsure what you want to do? Apply to everything and decide later.” Karl
